Symbolism and planning in the Tess Series
Monday, May 13, 2013
What makes a good story?
So am I saying that my characters are actually real? In a way, yes. Each character I create is based on elements of people I have met, talked to, researched in my life, and even how they look is often truthful too. Perhaps I should carry a warning with me when I chat to people 'beware, because at some point, elements of you may end up in a book...' that sounds awful doesn't it? Would it be better if I explain I'm a little in love with all of my characters?! Well, judging by comments from my readers, then perhaps some of them are too. There's nothing more satisfying than the prospect that your readers love your characters as much as you do.
The other thing is that my characters are deeply flawed, they're so far from perfect that it makes you wonder if you should even like them at all. If you're after the perfect hero or heroine, then I am afraid I'm going to disappoint you. In real life, such personalities don't exist, so, if it's not real, there's no place for it in my books! That's not to say I don't take a little artistic license, add a little flair here and there, but the essence of who that person is, exists. In the many people I have had the pleasure to meet in my as yet, short time on this planet.
What actually is the story then? The stories that evolve are based on the interactions between the main characters, their highs, their lows, their loves, their losses. What better story is there in life than the relationships between people, and the resulting consequences?
As the Tess series draws to a close, I have found that the characters who have been created have demanded a life of their own, and who am I to argue with them? In the same way that Master Charles demanded His own introduction Becoming the Master, Lady Isabella, a new character for Menage a Tess, has started to whisper to me that she wants the same as Him. So, she is currently telling me the story of a delicious encounter which she had in an elevator when she was fresh out of University. She really is quite a woman. Should I mention she also has a series of her own planned? Perhaps that's a discussion for another time...
The characters I create have a world of their own, a life, a history, a future. I would love for you to join me as I write their stories, and find new personalities... The future is an exciting place, do you dare to follow me there?
Psst... Do you want to know more about my writing before anyone else does? A veritable plethora of freebies and fun... Take a look here if you're interested...

Tickling - Pleasure or torture?
To tickle lightly or not to tickle lightly?
Let’s start with the science bit. There are two technical names for tickling, knismesis and gargalesis. As old faithful Wikipedia states it:- “Knismesis and gargalesis are the scientific terms, coined in 1897 by psychologists G. Stanley Hall and Arthur Allin,[1] used to describe the two types of tickling. Knismesis refers to the light, feather-like type of tickling. This type of tickling generally does not induce laughter and is often accompanied by an itching sensation.[2] Gargalesis refers to harder, laughter-inducing tickling, and involves the repeated application of high pressure to sensitive areas.[2] This “heavy tickle” is often associated with play and laughter.” Essentially, light or heavy tickling. I rather have an appreciation of tickling myself as I enjoy a light drag across my soles from time to time, and there’s nothing more relaxing than a light tickly caress. I tend to find fetishists fall into one group or the other with regard to heavy or light tickling, it is very rare you will find a ticklee who enjoys both. The tickler however, may choose to practice both types of tickling, but I’ve not found a situation yet where they’re practiced on the same person. I think this has mostly to do with the fact that they’re both such wildly different sensations. With knismesis, it is a much more sensual, teasing caress, designed to make the skin goosebump, to sensitise the skin as much as possible, but with gargalesis, it can become painful from increased pressure in sensitive spots, and bruising can occur if you are not careful, or you’re unlucky enough to be prone to bruises.
In Tickled Pink, I explored sensual tickling, as although both practices are considered highly erotic, for me, it was easier to understand the sensual and light touches as being something tender and loving, and innately sexual. Something else to remember is that either style of tickling is a high endurance activity. Huge trust is required for the ticklee as they are often tied down, and when laughter begins, there are elements of breath control involved. I’m sure you can think of a time when you have laughed so hard that you found yourself short of breath? The same is also true here, however in an often more intense fashion. The tolerances of each ticklee must be carefully observed to save harm occurring, and of course if restraint is involved, with any bondage activity, a quick release must be provided at all time. Finally, it’s not just the ticklee who could find themselves in trouble as the gleeful tickler may find a thrashing limb come loose and make contact if a knot has worked itself free, so they must be vigilant for their own safety too.
What and who to tickle with?
The good thing about tickling is you don’t really need any specialised tools to partake, just some wriggling fingers is more than enough in most cases. However, if you decide you need a little something else, there are a number of favourites, some of which are obvious, others that are perhaps not so obvious. For example, feathers and brushes, large and small are all implements that are associated with tickling, even in the most innocent of circumstances. Then you have harder objects that you may not think could have such ticklish effects, like a comb, or a pencil, or even a vibrator used lightly across skin, pretty much anything you can think of can be used in a devilishly evil fashion! So once you’ve selected your instruments of torture, just who can you tickle? I have found that it doesn’t appear gender specific. The male isn’t generally the tickler and the female isn’t always the ticklee. As with the gender equality, so is the power exchange balance, many ticklers consider themselves Switch, with desire both to tickle and be tickled. Yes, there are some that remain defined by Dominant and submissive roles, but I notice more than any other fetish I’ve explored that Switches appear plentiful. Sexual orientation doesn’t seem to be a huge bother either, with many Bisexual, Gay and Lesbian couples and groups enjoying the freedom it brings. Indeed groups can often be a large part of tickle play – what could be more pleasure or more torture than lots of hands wriggling across your body?
There is so much more to the genre that I can detail here, the ‘Nylon tickle’, ‘Sexual tickling’ etc but if you wish to delve further into the topic yourself, there is a wealth of information available to research. Tickling Media Forum, FetLife, and many more I probably haven’t even encountered yet! If you thought yourself indifferent about tickling before, perhaps you can close your eyes and think back to that last time someone ‘accidentally’ tickled you. Did you want to get away from them at any cost? Or did you feel a tingle flutter deep in your stomach at the thought of returning that tickle, or being helpless to their fingers? So – if I’ve whetted your appetites, here’s the synopsis and an excerpt from my latest release! Enjoy – if you dare…

The Mental Side of BDSM
Ah!! Hello there! *waves* I didn't see you for a minute, um, thanks for inviting me, I spill my thoughts here right? Well. Ok then! Welcome to my musings - and my first post for NNP. I thought this particular topic would perfect to explain where my ideas for my stories come from. Although it's a little something I wrote a while ago, this post is full of ideas and questions all gleaned from my experiences and research - so I believe it's still relevant now. Please do feel free to let me know what you think, I do so adore a good debate! So, here goes - the Mental side of BDSM.
BDSM is all about pain right? A good whipping, spanking, flogging, lots of bruises and marks as a badge of honour? For some yes – but there’s more. Much more than just the focus on pain. Through my conversations with those in the lifestyle, I have come to realise that at the core of everything BDSM is the intense mental connection between partners. It’s funny really as my stories have been labelled as ‘soft BDSM‘ due to my focus on mainly the mental and emotional connections that are forged between my protagonists. I agree, whilst I do not write about hard pain, the mental and emotional power exchange between partners, is for me, a much more potent marker of what BDSM represents.
Power exchange happens every day in so called ‘vanilla’ life but it is seen as acceptable if it is even noticed at all. Bullies try to enforce their dominance on people without their consent, others dominate in more subtle ways, and naturally submissive people happily work away to the commands of others. When I realised I was one of these natural submissives a lot of questions about my happiness slotted into place. For example the jobs I’d found most difficult, most stressful, were the jobs where I had no one to please. Making decisions, giving orders and planning wasn’t the problem for me as I am a very organised person, but if I was just managing my own workload, I became unhappy, depressed almost. And then I realised what was happening. I went back to being a PA, and the more people I had to look after, going just that little bit further to make them happy – I was happy. Deliriously so. So where am I going with this line of thought? Dominance and submission within personalities isn’t essentially a sexual thing. It is a marker of our innate characteristics, it is only when we exaggerate these characteristics that the sexual boundaries are explored.
Quite often I feel that the first four terms of BDSM are forgotten in favour of the more glamorous, perhaps salacious and more gossip-worthy last two. Bondage and discipline. Dominance and submission. Where is the beating and whipping and bruising in that? Pain is involved in the Sadism and masochism. Just because pain isn’t involved does not devalue or nullify an experience. I’m not in the lifestyle 24/7. I do not profess to be – but I would point out that astrophysicists do not have to experience the affect of a black hole first hand to know what effects they cause. I observe. I research. I dream. I am a big believer in free choice and keeping your mind open, and through my research I have found that the powerful mental connections associated with bondage, discipline, Dominance and submission are so strong that I am amazed there is so little mainstream written about this.
I have a feeling this debate will carry on in many forms. Anything but pain and severe markings will be nay-sayed as true BDSM, and then there will be those who live a vanilla lifestyle who can’t understand why they don’t feel whole, why there’s something missing from their lives who suddenly find BDSM but can’t understand why it seems right but they don’t have the urge to whip or be whipped… What’s the answer? There is no easy answer – I just have a theory, the start of a theory, it appears to be the answer for me and I explore it in my writing. Some readers have said that what I describe is realistic, and I’ve been asked if I write from experience. Conversely, others have said what I write bears no resemblance to reality. All we can do is explore different perceptions of what the lifestyle means to each of us, and more importantly than anything, continue to learn. To educate others to the diversity of practices that constitute BDSM so that each person can safely find their way to what is right for them. Maybe one day a choice to participate in BDSM will be seen as a respectable life decision, not perceived as an underground, secret and sometimes feared lifestyle

What's New at Naughty Nights Press - Our Official Three Month Mark
Well it has been three months since Naughty Nights Press, released our first e-books to the public and what a wonderfully busy three months it has been.We had the opportunity to debut three new authors and publish stories from other authors who are already known for their unique style of writing.
All our authors have been busily visiting blogs, tweeting about their own books and WIP’s (work in progress) along with what others have been doing, keeping their fans up to date with what is happening in their writing lives on their blogs, websites or Facebook pages.
To say that we treat each other as a family would be an understatement. Every one of those that have been contracted with Naughty Nights Press not only eagerly congratulate each other on what books are coming out through us, but also what books writers have coming out with other publishing houses.
Normally we hold interviews with authors or other people in the literary world, however, we the team of NNP along with our family of authors, have come up with something we hope is not only unique but will be of great fun and interest to you the reader and follower.
Every Monday, starting October 3rd, we will be presenting a segment that we are calling Chit Chat and All That! Each week a pair of writers, both published and unpublished, will be discussing or debating on different subjects.
Now, the way they are presenting it is as if you were sitting in the room with them whilst they chat back and forth between themselves, in a laid back and easy manner. We are all very excited about it and can’t wait for it to begin.
To give you an idea of who we have participating and what they will be talking about, just read this list.

Abby Hayes/Raymond Frazee 1/2/2012 Fetishes - What we like, what we dislike. What we enjoy writing about. What we would like to try in real life or in our stories?
And if you think that is something to be impressed about, we also have three authors who will be writing posts on a regular basis each month. Now for those who have been following us for a while, you already know that we have the sultry, and oh-so-wicked, Cassandre Dayne, who guest posts every 2nd Thursday. The luscious Kiki Howell will be guest posting the first Friday of every month, and making her debut as a monthly guest blogger, is the always seductive, Abby Hayes, who will be appearing every 3rd Tuesday. So between these three wonderful angels, or should I be saying wicked erotic devils, there should be some truly lively, interesting & hot topics, that will be discussed or debated on, each month.
Naughty Nights Press will still be holding their regular interviews, introducing you to our new authors each month and some of those names you already know.
October will see us chatting to Cassandre Dayne about the success of her first NNP book, Spankdown, and about her next two releases, Red Fire – Surrender and Raging Shadows, which are due out on the 30th of October. There will also be a giveaway to one lucky commenter who will be given a choice of receiving one of Cassandre’s new ebooks, in .pdf format, before they are released.
We will also be having Nathanial Bosch on NNP blog, talking to us about how it feels three months after the release of The Cabin, a story about BDSM that will open your eyes to the beauty that can be shared between a Dom and his pet.
Coming up in the last week of October, we also have some truly wonderful things happening to celebrate Halloween and the release of our first anthology, A Wicked and Wanton All Hallows Eve, on the 30th October and a week long celebration ending with a 100 Blog Hop.
So please mark these dates in your calendars, comment on the posts, and remember to tell your friends.
Above all, we would like to thank everyone for their continued support in helping to make Naughty Nights Press a success.
