High Praise for Something Like Voodoo, a YA Paranormal Romance by NY Times Bestselling Author Rebecca Hamilton #paranormal #fantasy #witches @inkmuse

My review of Something Like Voodoo, a YA Paranormal Romance by Rebecca Hamilton
A definite 5 star read!

Unique, engaging, and so much more than I expected! Something like Voodoo is filled with magic, and well, voodoo!
In this well-written young adult novel, Hamilton weaves together an illusion of magic, voodoo, and evil hexes for the high school students in a small suburban town.

Emily Bishop finds herself unwittingly drawn in to save Noah Caldwell from strange things neither he, nor she, quite yet understand. Emily finds more than she ever expected connects her 'gift' with ancestors of herself and Noah, the 'It Girls,' and their leader Sarah, whom, it seems, is out to destroy Emily by whatever means necessary.

Without giving spoilers, may I just say this thrilling read packs so much into one book! The author has clearly done her research and flawlessly executed a chilling but magical read for book lovers both young adult and older. Well done!

Blurb
A teen girl with the ability to predict deaths through her drawings shouldn't need to lie constantly to make her life sound interesting. But that doesn't stop Emily from spinning stories faster than she can keep up.

After transferring to a new school, Emily's 'dull' life is shaken by the appearance of a boy who seems unfazed by her far-fetched stories. A too-handsome-for-his-own-good senior, Noah has some secrets of his own. He needs Emily's special gift to save him from Sarah, queen bee of the school's It Girls, whose own supernatural abilities have forced him into a life of silence and solitude.

But when Emily tries to free him from Sarah's voodoo curse, things go belly up, landing Emily on Sarah's hit list. Soon, Emily and Noah are on a collision course with the It Girls, leading to a shocking revelation that ties them together in unimaginable ways. If their powers remain unchecked, this teenage popularity contest could spell the death of them all ...

Romantically charged and eerily chilling, Something Like Voodoo weighs the choice of saving your life versus fighting for a life worth saving. This paranormal romance will put a spell on you.

A quick reminder to check out our previous boxed set, Alpha Fever, if you haven't already. I know you won't want to miss it!

I have Sylvina Storm with me here today. I hope you'll join me in giving her a warm welcome, NNP style. *smiles and claps*
I’m so glad I could be here today. This is my first full-length box set, and Gina has really broken me in. :P

Hahaha! I guess I didn't scare you away, at least. *grins*
How long have you been a writer and how did you get into writing?
I’ve been writing for at least twenty years, though I kept it all to myself until recently. I started with poetry and short stories in middle school and started my first epic fantasy novel in high school. Ugh. It was an epic monstrosity, but we all have to start somewhere, right?

I wrote two stories in an urban paranormal setting under another pen name before I decided erotica fit my interests better. Now I write smoking hot inter-dimensional alien ménage romances. I couldn’t be happier with the new world I’ve wandered into.

Are you a full time author?
I write part-time, but I wish I could devote myself to a full schedule writing. I still treat my work as a career, though. I have other hobbies, but they don’t consume me with the same passion as writing.

What are the best and the worst aspects of writing?
Creating new worlds and meeting the characters is the best way to idle away an afternoon. I spend a month or so outlining each book. My characters speak to me at the oddest times, but I always keep a pen handy to write down their secrets.

I hate editing, though it’s a necessary evil. I learn more with each pass, so the next book is faster to edit than the last. One day, I hope the words flow onto the page without errors and in the best sequence possible. We can dream, right?

Always. Without our dreams where would we be. *smiles*
What inspires you to write?
Literally everything. Passing a stalled car on the street. Watching a father play with his kids. Seeing a beautiful sunset. They all invoke a horde of plot bunnies.

Some I allow to idly wander in my daydreams. Others, I wrangle into words and sentences for later contemplation. I can’t go a day without dreaming up a new scene, character, or concept.

Is there a particular author who inspires you?
I grew up reading Anne McCaffrey, Piers Anthony, Madeleine L’Engle, and Mercedes Lackey. Julia Kent hooked me on ménage romances. Johanna Lindsey made me fall in love with historical romance. Every author I come into contact with inspires me. Their characters become part of me, and therefore, influence the stories I create.

What is the title of your inclusion in Beyond the Veil? How did you come up with the idea for it?
Destined is book one in the Aliens, Myths, & Magic series. I originally wrote this story as a vampire ménage romance. I sent it off to my beta readers in 2014, and several commented that is was ‘similar to other vampire ménage stories’.

That wasn’t good enough for me. Although the story was almost ready for release at the time, I went back to the drawing board. I wanted something fresh and original, without straying too far afield.

I’m a big fan of Ancient Aliens, and I love mythology with a passion. One of the big ‘conspiracy theories’ is that aliens are among us. Not only have they influenced history, but they co-exist on earth alongside us. I embraced the idea and a new series was born.

How did you conduct your research for Destined?
I joined a polyamorous group on Facebook to research the romantic angle. I didn’t just want to write a threesome kink story. They have their place, but my characters demanded more. The people on that group helped me work out the dynamics of such a complicated relationship.

For the BDSM angle, I joined some other groups and followed a few blogs from those in the lifestyle. I wanted to make sure I represented the people and their culture as realistically as possible. I also read several hundred books a year, so I have a good idea what resonates and what doesn’t.

For the mythology, I had to pare back a few times. I wanted to embrace all the myths and legends using one race- the Intarans. I started with their bloodlines looking at mythologies and pantheons, but those are well represented in romance already. I decided to broaden the concept. My aliens are capable of the magic qualities found in any of the myths and legends because they inspired them. They aren’t werewolves or angels or gods, but some of their ancestors played the role in the past.

Can you give our readers your two favorite lines/quotes from Destined?
“There’s no reason to be afraid, Red. There’s no big bad wolf here tonight.”

The twinkle in his eyes told me the opposite was true. The wolf was right here. And if I let him, he wouldn’t hesitate to eat me.

What would your friends say is your best quality?
My dirty mind. LOL. I have awesome friends who appreciate my warped sense of humor.

Hmmm, I think a dirty mind is a terrible thing to waste. Glad to see you putting yours to great use! *winks*
Are reader reviews important to you?
Absolutely. I cherish anyone who takes the time to leave an honest review, even if they don’t like my book. I discovered a lot about my style while reading the reviews on my first two published novels. I hope to continue learning from their comments. Their encouragement and excitement give me a reason to keep writing.

What do you do when you don’t write?
Is this a trick question? :)

I’m always writing. I send myself notes in email and write on napkins and post sticky notes everywhere. I’m disabled, so I can’t sit at the computer long, but I’m always conversing with my characters as I take care of the odds and ends necessary to running a household.

Tell us about your other books?
I wrote two urban paranormal novels under the pen name Kyra Dunst. They aren’t romances, and my style changed considerably between those novels and my current series. The second book in the Aliens, Myths, & Magic series comes out on May 2, 2016. I have nine books planned in this series and two spin-offs in the works.

If you could share one thing about yourself you would like our readers to know, what would it be?
Hmm. I can offer good recommendations on naughty toys? :D

Uhmm, better leave that for another post. Didn't mark this one down as explicit. *winks*
Where can readers find your works, do you have a blog or website?

Or friend me on Facebook:

Thank you so much for joining us today, Sylvina. It's been a true pleasure working with you on the Beyond the Veil Boxed Set. I am sure readers will fully enjoy Destined.
We are going to leave our readers with a small tease to get them started. Care to give us something steamy? *naughty grin*

Destined
Aliens, Myths, & Magic
Book One
Excerpt

***Ryleigh***

Lukas trailed his hands under my shirt and caressed my breasts. Since I hadn’t anticipated company after Mimi left last night, I was naked underneath the sweater. He murmured in approval as he tugged the material off. When his lips closed over my nipple, I sighed in delight. The slightest nip of teeth sent waves of pleasure straight to my clit.

I yanked at his jeans as I tried to lower the damned zipper, and he laughed against my breast.

“Patience, love.”

His tongue moved to the other tip as he ran his fingers down my back. His right hand played with the neglected peak, and he soothed it in time with his mouth. When he rolled until I reclined underneath him, I gave up on the stubborn zipper for a minute. Desperate to return the affection, I cupped him through the denim. He sucked in a breath, and I increased the pressure again.

Lukas lifted himself away from me and grabbed my hands. He gently held them together and placed them above my head. “If you don’t slow down, I won’t last long.”

As soon as he let go, I brought them down to his naked shoulders. When had he removed his shirt? He growled against my chest.

“I should’ve worn a belt.” He muttered.

“A belt?” I whispered. “Why do you need a belt?”

“You want Mimi upset with me for tearing up this blanket to restrain those naughty hands? No? Then keep them there.” Oh god, his voice changed into something dominant and demanding and his words inflamed me.

I felt my clit getting wetter, and shifted my legs, trying to relieve the aching need. He inhaled and pressed his lips against my pulse as a shudder raced through his body. I smiled to myself, pleased I elicited this reaction in such a large and powerful man.

My hands drifted to his back, and I ran my fingers through the silky strands at the base of his neck. His head shot up, and a ferocious grin lit up his face. I shivered in response as a sliver of delicious fear slid down my spine. I wasn’t afraid of him, but his demeanor turned feral.
His raw and untamed passion threatened to consume me.

As he slipped the blanket from under me, his gaze never left mine. The sound of ripping fabric filled the room, and I flinched. He wrapped a strip of torn cloth around one wrist and tied the end in a neat knot. It was obvious he’d done this before.

“Won’t Mimi be upset with you?”

He shrugged, but a smirk crept over his lips. “I’ll get her another.”

The other edge of the material snaked under the loveseat around the far leg. He pulled until my arm stretched toward the sofa. When he looked at me, his smile crumbled.

He cupped my cheek in his palm. “Are you okay with this? I can stop…”

I cut him off with a kiss, grateful for his concern. He had no idea what crazy things I fantasized about doing. Hell, he’d met me at a kink club, for god’s sake.

“Don’t stop now.” I whispered as I placed my free wrist in his hand.

The pleased glow lighting up his eyes sent a thrill through me as he bent to finish his task. I’d never gotten beyond fantasizing about bondage. He wanted to do more than play, he took charge. His hands slid down my bound arms, and I tested the bonds.

Honestly, I could pull hard enough to move the furniture, but I played along, pretending to be restrained.

His appraisal took in my nipples as they peaked in the chilled room, and a hungry look appeared on his face. He trailed his lips from one wrist to my shoulder and repeated the process with the other arm. His tongue tasted me at intervals as he caressed my neck and collarbone. Then he brought my buds to peaks before moving down my stomach to my jeans. With deft fingers, he removed them, humming in pleasure as he revealed my mound.

As I lay there before him helpless, I rubbed my legs together and tried to relieve the ache in my clit.

Lukas shook his head. He grabbed one ankle and secured it to the nearest chair with another strip of blanket. Though he was extra cautious handling my bandaged leg, it didn’t hurt anymore, and the scratches were already healed. He attached it to the side table.

I trembled, spread before him, naked and exposed.

He nuzzled my legs in the same manner he’d worshiped my arms. I could tell it excited him, having me bound and at his mercy. I tested the bindings again. They had a little play, but the ties weren’t uncomfortable. In fact, under his caring ministrations, I felt safe.

Cherished.

“Now, what shall I do with you?” His lips whispered over my pussy.
He hovered over the curls guarding my core, keeping his focus on my face. When he dipped his chin, I arched toward him in anticipation. With a deep, throaty chuckle, he splayed his hands on my hips and held me in place as he positioned himself above me. He still wore his jeans, and the rough material rasped against the tender inner flesh of my thighs.
Taking his time, he kissed a trail from my mouth to my clit.

He blew through the tendrils, watching and waiting to see if I would move. I fought the urge to squirm. He finally parted the damp folds and licked my slit. I groaned with him as his eyes closed, savoring the contact. He nibbled on the distended nub, increasing the pressure and length of each stroke until his tongue found my center and plunged inside.

The sensation sent me over the edge, and I came.

Guest Post – An Excuse to Read by Kiki Howell

Years ago I came across two books on dragon magick in a bookstore. The idea of spells that take you to a realm where dragon live fascinated me. Beyond belief or disbelief in these books labeled as non-fiction, I had to have them. Of course, with my schedule, family, writing, and all, they sat on my book shelves yellowing. But, when I was asked to write a story for a shifter paranormal romance boxed set, I knew I’d found my excuse to finally open them up and read.

Part of the books is a listing of all of the dragons that the author had met with the spells. Their names and clans and a little about what they revealed to her is there. Given I read the books in the summer, and I’m not a fan of the heat, the snow white dragon caught my eye as my shifter. I didn’t read the books in their entirety, but I never found a description of what the realms themselves were like. So, I mixed this black abyss with the lore of them guarding treasure to create a place where one floats in a gem-lit sky of sorts. To be honest, I wanted the challenge of writing a hot sex scene there *winks*

A happy accident in reading the books was finding a spell to heal auric wounds. Like many spell books, there are always spells or parts of spells that prepare the witch, clearing energy and such to give him or her a clean slate in which to practice, free from the trapping of this world that could interfere. Since I prefer to write the damaged hero or heroine, I gave my human the auric wounds in the story, creating yet another obstacle between her and her dragon mate. You know, as if being a dragon shifter from another realm in love with a human wasn’t enough.

Regardless, I had a lot of fun both researching and writing my dragon shifter story. I hope you will enjoy reading it. It has never before been published, so it’s releasing first in the Alpha Shifter Seductions Paranormal Romance Box Set alongside many other fantastic shifter stories that I’m dying to read myself.

Below is a little information on the Alpha Shifter Seductions Box Set and an excerpt from my contribution.

When the Snow Flies by Kiki Howell Excerpt:
She couldn’t shake her head and make it go away. No amount of rubbing her eyes with gritty hands made it any different. Even blinking didn’t change anything. She didn’t need to pinch herself to know she was awake, given the tiny cuts she had on her body that stung with the dust and debris that had landed on them. She had no choice at some point but to believe that this dragon above her was real, even though some part of her still fought the idea as ridiculous.
After some time of patrolling, the white dragon landed gracefully on the ground. She got up on her knees to keep him in view. In a swirl of lights filled with sparkling snow—not stars as she had originally thought—the dragon seemed to literally melt into a human. As soon as the light died down, this completely naked man ran into the cabin, took the stairs, and ended up in the doorway to what was left of the room.
Now, her breath really caught. Her heart and lungs failed her for a minute as she took him in. His unnaturally white locks hung in longer waves, framing his face, playing off of the glittering scruff of hair over his lip and lining his jaw. Her eyes trailed down over him, his pale skin covering tight muscle that bulged over his shoulders and chest, leading to a perfect cut of abdominal muscles. At the base of his stomach, just below his belly button, a patch of glistening hair led her eyes to a handsome package, already getting excited just by seeing her.
Her heart did a flip in her chest. She glanced at his hands in fists, appreciating the way his veins on his lower arms trailed over the muscles there. Her body begged to be touched in an undeniable hunger that she though permanently dormant inside of her. He looked at her, as filthy as she was from the fall of the roof, as if she were the most beautiful thing he had ever seen, with a hunger of his own glistening in those ice-blue eyes that she swore pierced through her to her very soul.
“We have to go,” he said suddenly. “You need to follow me out. Once I turn, you will climb onto my back, and I will take you away with me. I know it is a lot to ask, but he will come back. This is what he does, takes off and returns. He’s not done with me tonight, or trying to get to you. Especially now that he knows you are my mate, or I would not have been here protecting you. You have to trust me. I can hide you in another realm, get you cleaned up, and we can talk all you want.”
“Fly away with you, on that white dragon into another realm?” she cried, choking on each word she managed to get out.
“Yes. He can’t get to us there. We have dragons that protect the realm. But, we can also be alone and talk. I’m sure you have more questions.”
“Questions? Right. But, get on an animal, I guess for lack of a better term, one that I’m still having trouble even believing exists and let it take me away to another realm, whatever that means, that is so far beyond a leap of faith I don’t know what to call it.”
“I know. And, I’m sorry. I haven’t hurt you. You must trust me. He is going to come back any minute, and I have to protect you. I will take you by force otherwise; grab you and fly away. I don’t see as if you have a choice. Sorry. Again. It is all I can do to keep you safe, keep you alive.”
“You do realize that you are not only asking me to trust you, but you are asking me to accept a world of myths and legends. Of things that kid’s books or sometimes nightmares are made of?”

Excerpt
A kindred spirit. His warm brown eyes seemed to glow in the muted forest light, and the sun coming from behind hit his hair and it shone brighter than before, almost creating a halo. She shook her head lightly, berating herself for her fanciful thoughts. He was just an ordinary man. An ordinary man who was now a lot closer and stretching out his hand in greeting.
“I’m Adrian,” he introduced himself. “I’m from Adiron, just north of the forest.”
Persephone took his hand and a small bolt of electricity ran through her arm. Her eyes widened and she saw Adrian’s do the same.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “I’m not sure what happened there.”
Persephone smiled softly, though her heart still pounded from the shock. “That’s okay.” They looked at each other and laughed as they realized they’d repeated their first words to each other almost exactly. “I’m Persephone.” She chuckled, delighting in the merry sound of his deep laugh and the way his warm eyes seemed to dance, slightly crinkled at the corners from his mirth. “I’m from Mythosandria, just through the trees to the east. To be honest, I’m also trying to escape for some peace.”
Adrian nodded, a knowing look in his eyes. “I’ll share my story if you share yours.” He suddenly grinned devilishly.
She couldn’t help but flash her own grin in response. A deep breath sent sharp pain through her ribs, reminding her of why she was out here. She grimaced in pain, holding her hands to her side.
Adrian stepped forward, concern deepening his voice. “Are you all right?”
Persephone nodded, pain straining her voice. “I will be. Just some bruised ribs, courtesy of the drunkard I’m supposed to call Father.” Slowly straightening her stance, she took shallow breaths as the discomfort subsided. She glanced up at Adrian, who stood a head taller than her, despite being rather tall herself. His eyes had darkened and were almost black. She noticed his eyes scan her face, pausing on her cheek, and she guessed that a bruise was starting to show where she’d been struck. Adrian reached up his large hand to gently brush the tender flesh and Persephone flinched as a small stab of pain radiated from her cheek. He paused, his hand hovering over the skin but not touching while his eyes, still dark with anger, seemed to search her own, looking for what she didn’t know.
“Your own father did this to you?” he demanded quietly, his voice steady but his growing fury imminent. All she could do was nod and look down. His finger hooked her chin to force her to look up. “You do not look down in shame. You have nothing to ashamed about. He’s the brute who should be ashamed. I have half a mind to tell him as such.”
As he turned in the direction of her village, Persephone grabbed his arm. “No, please don’t!” she cried, hating herself for sounding so weak. “It’s not all the time; he just has bad days, that’s all.”
“And that gives him the right to lay a hand in anger on you? You should not be defending him. You’re the one who needs defending.”
His words pricked her pride. “Like I’m a defenseless, helpless maiden in need of rescuing? I can defend myself, thank you.” Anger flooded her where fear had been only moments before. “I won’t be standing idly by for much longer, I’ll have you know. I don’t care that they have plans for me to marry that pig the mayor calls a son,” she spat. “I just need to find somewhere to go when I leave.”
Adrian stood back and looked her up and down. She watched him take in her fiery stance and nod. “Glad to hear it.”

Phoenix Johnson has always been intrigued by the written word. Even when she was a young girl, she usually had her nose stuck in at least one book, and her need to read would drive her to peruse the back of the same cereal box each morning at breakfast.
Paranormal and fantasy captured her heart, with tales about dragons, magic, and fanciful creatures sweeping her away to a wonderful new world where she felt she truly belonged. While she dabbled in writing while in primary school, it wasn’t until high school that she decided she should try her hand at writing her own book, and even gave poetry a try.
She wandered away from writing for a few years, but was soon encouraged to return and, within months of picking up the proverbial pen, Phoenix’ first story, The Wolf In The Neighborhood, was accepted for publication by Naughty Nights Press. While working on the rest of the Wolf Smitten Trilogy, Phoenix decided to take on a university degree, and is now in the final stretch of her Bachelor of Art’s degree in Professional Writing and Publishing, with plans to continue on to her Master’s degree.
In early 2015, Phoenix was thrilled to discover she’d made two Top 5 lists with three entries in the 2015 Easychair Bookshop Awards. In June, it was announced she had placed first in Best Paranormal with Once Bitten, Twice Shy, the second instalment in her Wolf Smitten Trilogy, while The Wolf In The Neighborhood and Wolf Smitten placed third in their respective categories of Best Paranormal and Best Series. With her inclusion in the Alphas on the Prowl Box Set in 2015, Phoenix hit the top 100 bestsellers lists across numerous distributors, number 1 bestseller on several Amazon lists, and this was quickly followed by the announcement of her achievement of number 1 bestseller for her publisher, Naughty Nights Press, for the full second quarter of 2015. The awards and achievements have only served to strengthen her ambitions, and she is now aiming at reaching the bestseller lists for USA Today and New York Times.
Phoenix has been working hard to make 2015 her year, and has been busy organizing paranormal anthology Twisted Tales with seven other authors. Its release at the end of June was greatly anticipated, and she is extremely excited to see where her writing career takes her next.
