Mine Before Midnight

This retelling of Cinderella is set in a biker club with WAY cooler shoes.

Death is the only way out. And even then, you’re never truly free. No matter what you do you’re always connected. A road warrior for life, nothing but a renegade even when you’re no longer on Earth. I ball my hands into fist, trying to keep from losing my shit in silent room. It’s not fair and there’s nothing I can do about it.
I press my lips together, unsure of what will come out of my mouth if I don’t. I need to get out of here. The melody of Free Bird, my dad’s favorite song, flows through the high ceilings of the Miller’s Funeral Home. Those first few chords rip me apart. Emptiness fills my soul. I swallow hard, holding back the river of tears about to burst through and hightail it out of the building. The door slams shut keeping everyone away from me, at least for a little while.
I take a deep breath and slowly exhale. There’s no place for the weak in this club, I’ve got to be strong no matter what. No one gives a shit that I’d rather be the one in that coffin. Maybe I should just take off and violate my probation. Prison is a better choice than living without the one person who cared if I lived or died. I wipe away the few tears that escaped and sit on the front step. No one said life was fair, right? I light up a cigarette and deeply inhale.
“You know those things will kill ya,” an unfamiliar voice says.
I turn around and stare at a man who looks more like a model than any biker I’ve ever seen, chestnut hair that begs you to run your fingers through it, a chiseled face with just enough scruff, green eyes that can pierce an armored tank. If it wasn’t for his Chrome Crusaders cut I’d swear he was lost or an angel coming to save me.
I take a drag of my cigarette and slowly blow the smoke out. “Really?” I roll my eyes. He probably thinks I’m vulnerable and easy prey for a one-nighter. Please, I’ve been around guys like him my whole life. I know all the tricks. “You’ve got a death wish or something?” I gesture toward his cigarette.
He blows out a puff of smoke in between a quick laugh. “Maybe.” He takes a drag. “I was taking about those.”
He points to my studded stiletto heels.
