For the Heart of Phillip

Welcome hun. We could not be happier to have you join us!
Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to host an interview with you on the Naughty Nights Press blog!

Thank you so much! It’s an honor to be here!

1. Can you share a few “tid bits” about your self? What is a typical day like for you? What “pet peeves” do you have if any?

A few ‘tid bits’ about me would be that I’m a grad student, a cat mom, married over 12 year to a great guy, and really big on family, games, and knowledge in general.

A typical day for me? I have two different poles of that: one where I’m not working (right now) and one where I am working.
The not-working me spends most of the day either playing games, writing, playing with the cats, eating, or going out to figure-skate or bike with my Dad.
At the times where I am working I go get the day job done and think about my stories all during lunch. I always bring a notebook with me. When I come home I write down my ideas and get on with my evening.

Wow, pet peeves. I’d definitely say the biggest one is people not getting back to me. I’m a tad OCD when it comes to that. I write you, I’d like to hear back pdq, thank you. I’m not big on phone calls, so emailing is my main form of communication.

2. When did you first realize you wanted to be an author?

When I was roughly seven years old I had an old desk in my room. I’d spend most of my days (before and after school) drawing, coloring, writing, painting, and creating. It fully developed into a hobby after an 18-day vacation that my family took. I was 12 at the time and bored to tears. Dad gave me pads of paper and markers and I don’t think they heard from me too much after that. J

3. How long have you been writing for publication?

Since 2007, when I first got a notice from the publisher. I realized later it was a vanity press, but I didn’t know the difference yet. After that, I self-published, and only recently got accepted by a ‘real’ publisher.

4. Do you write exclusively erotic romance?

Under this name, yes. Male/male romance has been in my blood since I was 16 years old and the genre fit me perfectly.

5. What made you decide on the M/M Erotic genre as your primary focus?

I think my active imagination plus I felt like the ‘black sheep’ of the family added to it. Gays were always very taboo and never discussed at all in my household. My brother told me the ‘big secret’ of one of his friends being gay. I was hooked! I figured they knew what’s it’s like to be the oddball just like me.

6. What inspires your stories?

Soap operas mostly, but also real life a bit. I’ve taken most of my tales from just thinking of the underdog (which I consider myself to be) and went from there. I’ve been praised for coming up with very likeable, loveable men who are hardly the ‘alpha’ types.

7. What was your goal for yourself as a writer when you started? Did you meet or surpass it or did it change for you along the way?

I have met my writing goals for the most part. I’ve written the ‘great American gay novel’, I’ve been accepted and published. The one thing missing is a bestseller and to see it carried in stores. I’m satisfied with the success I’ve had and want to see them grow.

8. Do you have a set schedule for writing or do you just go with the flow?

Go with the flow, definitely. I schedule nothing except a work day. I’ll usually come up with an idea very spontaneously and rush over to the computer to tap it in or grab the nearest pad of paper (which are in every room).

9. Which comes first, the story, the characters or the setting?

The characters. Once you make up a person in your mind, you can fill in the background later with what seems most fitting to them.

10. What are the elements of a great erotic romance for you?

Character development comes first with me. There has to be a foundation to it all, not just instant sex! I don’t operate like that in real life, and though I’ve seen it in movies, it was never an attraction for me. I like a history, and of course, major drama! Lots of my reviews reveal the generous dollops of drama that are in my works. Of course, there’s the sex…but not every other page!

11. What are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of writing?

The most challenging aspect would be patience. I’m not a patient person, but I’m trying to develop the virtue. Waiting to hear back from publishers, or edits or whatever…it all takes time. I think I’m a little too OCD with our ‘instant’ world.

Rewarding aspects would be when the beta loves it, the editor loves it, and the cover is phenomenal! And to me, every sale is a reward that says, hey! I’m a professional author!

12. Can you share a little bit about your upcoming release with us? Where can we find it?

My latest book is “Life After Math” which is a sequel to “Love by the Numbers” (2009, Publishamerica). The story follows the couple of Scott and Jared into college where the newly-promised duo has to deal with not only jealous wanna-be lovers, but also Scott’s over-commitment to math tutoring and his new friend, Daniel. It gets very dramatic with a twist at the end.

It can be found right now for pre-order at Silver Publishing’s site, http://silverpublishing.info and its official release date is March 26th. After that, it will be on Amazon, 1Romance, All Romance ebooks, and several other sites.

13. If you weren't writing, what would you be doing?

When I was young I wanted to be one of two things: a figure-skater or a secretary. (chortle). I’ve done the secretary thing, no thanks. The figure-skating is definitely something I’d delve back into (which I am currently doing, by the way).
But I really cannot imagine being something other than an author…it’s what I was put here to do.

14. Is there a specific bit of advice you would give to an aspiring author who is looking to publish their work? Traditional or Self-Publishing, which would you suggest?

Depends on the person and their patience level, plus how much time they have to devote to it. The pluses of self-pub are that you call the shots, but that also means you have to find a cover artist, a beta reader, an editor, and put it out in the world yourself and do all of the marketing.
Traditional they cover the editing, the cover, etc. Most I’ve noticed don’t do a lot of marketing though, except to have it on their site and the other sites.
Remember, it’s your book, tell everyone you know about it. It’s like a resume to the world…

15. Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers? Where can our readers find you?

One thing I like to ask people is to either rate my books (feedback is always welcome) or if they don’t feel comfortable because of the genre, then please email me at ladyauthorsld@gmail.com. I love fan mail!

People can find me on facebook (for way too many hours in a day) LOL. I also have a blog site at www.ladyauthorsld.blogspot.com. All of my reviews are on goodreads as well.

Thank you S.L ! It’s been great getting to know more about you and your writing. I hope we will do it again real soon!

  1. I enjoyed your interview, especially identifying with the "underdog" and your figure skating. I love that your writing tells a story with conflict and is just not raw sex.
